- publish important new findings and reviews across all areas of the molecular biosciences by authors in the international scientific community
- continue to increase its relevance and importance to readers as measured by metrics such as Impact Factor
- deliver the highest standards of peer review by maintaining an international Editorial Board of research-active eminent scientists covering a wide range of scientific expertise
- provide an excellent publication vehicle for authors by maintaining the speed of the reviewing process (~4 weeks to first decision) and publication times (~10 weeks online, ~12 weeks in print)
- implement a “Painless Publishing” strategy to ease the burden on authors where their work has been identified by reviewers as novel and interesting by only requesting extra experimental work if absolutely necessary to justify conclusions
- enable researchers to comply with the mandates of their funding bodies by offering a Gold Open Access option: Opt2Pay
- provide an easy to use and rapid online submission system for authors
- maintain best practice in ethical standards (e.g. screening figures to detect possible image manipulation, checking for plagiarism, etc) and through membership of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
- maintain the highest level of administrative support for Editorial Board members to allow them to focus on the selection of high-quality papers for publication
- continue to lead the development of innovative approaches to journal publishing including the Knowledge Environment concept and the Semantic Biochemical Journal
- directly involve the members of the Editorial Board in the development of journal strategy via an annual face-to-face Editorial Board meeting
- provide added content via the Knowledge Environments that supports the research community and the aims of the Biochemical Journal (e.g. Cell Signalling Biology)
- ensure the long-term preservation of the digital archive (from 1906)
